A's unclear if Murray will report
There's a No. 73 jersey reserved for outfielder Kyler Murray at the Oakland Athletics spring training site in Mesa, Ariz., but the team doesn't know if Murray will show up to claim it.
General manager David Forst said Sunday that he doesn't know when - or if - Murray will report, according to ESPN. Oakland selected Murray with the No. 9 overall pick in last June's draft, but didn't immediately assign him to a minor league team.
Instead, he was given one last year to play quarterback and Oklahoma, and he won the Heisman Trophy, guiding the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in the process.
Murray entered the NFL draft and is scheduled to attend the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis later this month. All the while, the A's apparently have been left in the dark about his baseball intentions.
Pitchers and catchers report to the A's camp on Monday, with position players due Friday. Murray is a non-roster invitee.
Last summer, Murray signed with the A's and received a $4.66 million signing bonus, a payment he would have to return if he chooses to play professional football.
Murray was in Atlanta during Super Bowl week, and in multiple interviews, he was noncommittal about his choice.
"In my head, I would love to play both," he said on the Dan Patrick Show.
Some NFL mock drafts have Murray being drafted in the first round.
