Essential Quality, beaten as Derby favorite, to miss Preakness
Essential Quality, the 2-year-old champion colt from 2020 who ran fourth in the May 1 Kentucky Derby as the 5-2 favorite, will not participate in the May 15 Preakness Stakes, according to his trainer Brad Cox.
The June 5 Belmont Stakes could be the next target for the previously unbeaten Essential Quality, but Cox told Maryland Jockey Club media that no decision has been made the colt's next start.
King Fury, scratched from the Derby due to a fever, will miss the Preakness because of continuing problems with his temperature, trainer Kenny McPeek said, adding that the colt had a "significant cough" on Tuesday.
Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert, is aimed to start in the Preakness and will have to contend with stablemate Concert Tour, among others in the field for the 1 3/16-mile race at Baltimore.
