Top Tech Expert Says Artificial Intelligence Is Running Out of Power, and Elon Musk's Fix Is to Leave the Planet

Baltimore, MD, Sept. 06, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Artificial intelligence has a problem that gets far less attention than the technology itself, according to tech investor James Altucher. It needs power, and the world is running short of ways to supply it.

In a newly released free presentation, Altucher argues that energy, not chips, is the real constraint holding AI back, and that Elon Musk has quietly engineered a way around it. The answer, Altucher says, is not another data center on Earth. It is to move the entire operation into orbit.

He calls it one of the boldest and most overlooked shifts in modern technology.

The Bottleneck Nobody's Talking About

Altucher's starting point is scale. A single data center, he notes, can draw as much electricity as 840,000 homes, roughly the entire city of Indianapolis, for one facility. To reach AI's full potential, he argues, the industry needs thousands more like it, and the grid was never built for that kind of demand.

He points out that the people building AI are the ones sounding the alarm. Nvidia's Jensen Huang has said, "Every data center of the future will be power limited." Sam Altman told Congress, "I think it's hard to overstate how important energy is to the future [of AI]." And Altucher notes that even Mark Zuckerberg has admitted Meta would build its AI far bigger if he could simply get his hands on enough electricity.

Why Space Solves It

Rather than compete for scarce power on the ground, Altucher says, Musk looked to orbit, where the conditions are close to ideal. In the presentation, Altucher lays out why he believes space sidesteps the problem entirely:

  • Sunlight almost around the clock. Solar panels work up to eight times better than on Earth, with no clouds, no weather, and no night, drawing sunlight more than 99% of the time.
  • Free cooling. Space already sits hundreds of degrees below zero, so the cooling that strains data centers on the ground costs nothing.
  • No grid, no blackouts. The systems run on constant solar power, without the outages that come with tapping an overloaded grid.
  • No permitting battles. No zoning boards, no local opposition, and no town that can turn the project down.
  • No rising utility bills or pollution complaints. None of the cost increases or community backlash now slowing data center projects on Earth.

Taken together, Altucher argues, those advantages make the approach extremely difficult for any rival to match.

Why This Changes How Musk's Space Business Should Be Seen

Most people, Altucher notes, still think of Musk's space venture as a rocket and satellite-internet company. He argues that view is already out of date.

The real story, in his telling, is what those satellites are quietly becoming: the foundation for artificial intelligence that runs from orbit. Seen that way, he says, the company looks less like a space business and more like one of the most important AI companies on Earth. That shift in perspective, he believes, is the piece nearly everyone is missing.

Why Altucher Says the Time to Understand It Is Now

Altucher frames the whole thing as an early moment in a much larger shift, the kind that reshapes industries before the public catches on. Fortunes, as he puts it in the presentation, tend to hide in the places 99% of people scroll right past.

The people who recognized past shifts early, he argues, were the ones who benefited most. Understanding this one now, before it becomes common knowledge, is the reason he put the presentation together.
