FILE - Joseph Ignatius Gilbert, 1840-1924, worked for the Associated Press from the early 1860s until his retirement. He died in Philadelphia. He was present at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on Nov. 19, 1863 on behalf of the Associated Press, where he took down in shorthand Edward Everett's oration and the short address of President Abraham Lincoln. He later wrote a short memoir describing his meetings with Lincoln, clearly the highlights of his long life as a journalist.
