SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 1: 'The Sydney Run Club' co-founder Yianni Moustakas talks to runners ahead of a social group run pre-dawn at Bondi Beach on July 1, 2026 in Sydney, Australia. The Sydney Run Club has grown rapidly since it was founded in 2025 by five friends. It hosts early morning social runs at Bondi Beach and Ramsgate every week. With an emphasis community and connection, more than purely training; the club's motto is 'Uniting people through running, wellness & experiences'. The running boom and growth of social run clubs is about more than fitness. It’s about connection, community and social opportunities, bringing people of different ages and abilities together on city streets, beaches and bush trails, often followed by conversation and coffee. Sydney, and Australia more broadly, has experienced a similar surge, with organisers attributing much of the growth to positive experiences, a shift in healthier lifestyle, accountability among friends, word of mouth and social media. According to Strava’s 'Year in Sport' report, running club participation grew by 59% globally year on year since 2024, making group running the fastest-growing social activity on the platform. Club organised events have also increased significantly. The growth of the TCS Sydney Marathon reflects that momentum. Before becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major in 2024, the race grew from around 5,000 finishers in 2022 to more than 40,000 competitors registered for this year’s race on August 30.
